Modifry Products builds specialty items, mostly electronic accessories, for the Honda S2000. Modifry Products, LLC was started in March of 2005 after several years of tinkering, building things in my basement, and occasionally selling them in a slightly hap-hazard fashion. Now it's officially a real business, with a dedicated shipping department (aka wife), but I still make nearly everything in the basement in my spare time.
I'm not a big fan of company 'mission statements' but since it's kind of expected these days I thought long and hard and came up with this:
Make cool gadgets, sell them for a reasonable price, don't upset the customers.
Modifry Products is a part-time business. That doesn't mean we're not serious about what we do, but it does mean we're not available to our customers 24/7. If you do have a need to Contact Us, please keep that in mind. We'll do our best to get back to you in a reasonable amount of time and answer your questions as best we can.
I'm an S2000 owner, just like most people who will be reading this. I am often asked if my full-time job is in a related field like electronic design or the automotive industry, or if I'm an electronic engineer. But it isn't, and I'm not. I have a full-time job in a totally unrelated industry and simply enjoy the challenge of building unique gadgets and the excitement of a part-time business. Other than the few occasions when I've upset the shipping department, it's been a lot of fun (maybe I should add that to my mission statement - "Don't upset the shipping department").
So where did 'modifry' come from, and why choose it for a business name? Like many S2000 owners I shared information about my car and the things I did to it on Internet forums like S2KI.com. And like other members of S2KI, I eventually created my own web site to provide a permanent place to document my ideas.
As part of my association with S2KI I had to choose a unique on-line identity, and that's how "modifry" was born. I've always liked to take things apart, "modify" them, and put them back together. My family often chides me with comments like "Bob won't buy anything unless he can modify it", and I guess it's partly true. So when choosing a forum name I thought about using "modify" but it wasn't unique enough to suit me. Then I thought about what happens when one of my electrical modifications goes wrong - things "fry". I combined the two and came up with "modifry".
Over the next few years I continued to "modifry" my car and post the results on the Internet. I also answered other owner's questions about the S2000, providing "electronic help" via the S2KI forums. People got to know me and sometimes expressed an interest in doing the same modifications to their cars that I had done to mine. I often heard "how much would it cost for you to make one for me?" In early 2002 when I invented the Glove Box Organizer things got really interesting.
The Glove Box Organizer was an idea I actually tried to give away to another entrepreneur because I wasn't sure I had the time to work on it. But as fate would have it, he was too busy with his own projects so I was forced to manufacturer my invention just so I could have one in my car. In an effort to recoup my development expenses I decided to make some extras and sell them to other S2000 owners. To my surprise that first batch of about 20 sold out in a matter of days. I've been building them ever since, and today they're still my best-selling product.
When it came time to choose a name for the business I spent several months thinking and searching, going so far as to read the dictionary in hopes of finding just the right name. The few interesting names I came up with were already taken, so I turned to the Internet for more ideas. I started doing lookups of automotive terminology on search engine sites, and one day just for fun I searched for "modifry". I was flabbergasted and amazed - over half the search results ended up pointing back to me in one way or another. It seems that after several years of being "modifry" to thousands of forum members and posting about my work, my name was high on the list of Internet search engines. At that point I had to admit that being "modifry" for the rest of my life wasn't such a bad idea.
So that's the story of Modifry Products, and why I decided to use the Modifry name. If you have any comments or suggestions about this web site or Modifry Products, feel free to Contact Us and give us your opinions.
